Following the First World War, the old boys and friends of Windermere Grammar School raised funds to erect a Memorial Sports Pavilion, which still stands in the corner of the playing field in what is now St Martin and St Mary Primary School. The green slate panels on the front of the pavilion record the names of the 216 old boys and masters who served in the war, 189 who returned, and 27 who did not. Most of the boys were from the local area, but a substantial number were boarders from as far away as Dublin and Croydon.
Using the school registers and other sources, I have been researching the 27 who lost their lives, and trying to identify the 189 who survived, and I will be depositing my results in the library at Windermere, and both the library and the archive centre at Kendal.
There are three names of survivors that I have been unable to trace – R.Mallinson, I.Robinson and N.E.Wilman – and I would be pleased to hear from anyone who might have information about any of them. I can be contacted on 015395 36388.
