The Rabbit Back Literature Society by Pasi Ilmari Jaaskelainen (Pushkin Press, £8.99)

This is a very odd but engaging book by a Finnish author with an extraordinary imagination.

It forces on literature teacher Ella Milana, who discovers that very strange things are happening in some of the books she comes across - words are rearranging themselves and stories are changing their endings.

As she starts to investigate, she receives an invitation to join a renowned local literature society, founded by famous children's author Laura White.

She will be first new member for many years. The other members, selected as children, have all gone on to enjoy literary success.

But soon Ela starts to suspect dark secrets lie at the heart of the society - and on the night she is due to be introduced as the latest member, Laura White mysteriously disappears.

There are some very unusual and disconcerting moments in the book and I 'm not sure I fully followed everything.

But it works because a very narrow, claustrophobic and rather supernatural world becomes almost believable.

It is a novel about memory, self-discovery and ambition and unlike anything else I have read.
