Kendal and The Westmorland Gazette would be remiss not to associate the new Royal Princess Charlotte with her antecedents, namely Princess Charlotte of Wales

A regiment which recruited from Kendal and the surrounding area took her title in 1804 and became The 5th (Princess Charlotte of Wales's) Regiment of Dragoon Guards, later simply (Princess Charlotte of Wales's) Dragoon Guards.

During the 1970s and 1980s The 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards became your local Cavalry Regiment and often paraded through Kendal.

Today the Regiment is known as the Royal Dragoon Guards after their amalgamation with the 4th /7th Dragoon Guards in 1992.

His royal Highness The Prince of Wales is the Colonel in Chief of The Royal Dragoons, previously known as 5th Innis DG or 'Skins'.

The photograph above is of The White Horse of Hanover sleeve badge, worn by the Senior NCOs of The 5th DG. It was an award given to the Regimental NCOs by Princess Charlotte on her wedding day in 1816. This was a year before she died of childbirth - had she survived, she would eventually have been the Queen of England.
