Further to your 50 Years Ago (Gazette, May 7), and the retirement of your Editor Mr J.G. Lightburn, I can round off the story.
He is buried in the north-west part of the churchyard of Melmerby, at the foot of the Pennines and of the Hartside road.
His tombstone (grey granite, about three feet high, in gilt capital letters) says: "In loving memory of John G. Lightburn, who died at Kendal on the 25th June 1974, aged 68 years. A Native of Melmerby. He was Editor of The Westmorland Gazette 1939-1965.
"At Home, At Last - At Rest. Also his dear wife Marjorie, who died on the 17 November 1995 aged 92 years. To live in the hearts of those we love, is not to die."
