Not convinced by EU points I question many of the points made by John Studholme in his letter regarding the EU (Letters, June 25, 'Europe more peaceful now').

1 When we had a referendum in 1975, most people believed that they were voting to remain in the European Economic Community (EEC). Yes, that is what it was called! We have never been consulted about our membership of the EU.

2 While there may not have been a war between the current members since 1945, to credit the EU for that seems to be stretching the imagination a bit too far.

3 The 2013 accounts have been audited (ie examined), but if you read the detail you find that numerous concerns were raised by the auditors. For example, page 11 says: 'All policy groups covering operational expenditure are materially affected by errors. The error rate for expensed payments underlying the accounts is 4.7%'.

This actually represents a very substantial amount of money which has not been accounted for. There are many similar concerns raised by the auditors, as has been the case year after year.
