I was surprised to read your ‘Where is it?’ (Digest, July 23) on Hawkshead Church stating that it was ‘enlarged to its present length in 1300 and widened in 1500’, as the second edition of Pursuer (mostly by Matthew Hyde) dates it mainly to 1578 and after. The item refers to its arcades ‘like nowhere else in England’.
Was your reporter referring to the murals on them, added in 1680? Grasmere had these until 1741, when they whitewashed them over - tastes change.
