Low Wood Hotel, beside the A591 near Ambleside, is a delightful, historic hotel simply oozing in character, so I was keen to visit the exhibition on August 21 to see their proposals for a new, larger hotel.

They propose moving the vehicular access out to the corner towards Ambleside, which worried me, but I was more concerned about the public footpath which runs up behind the hotel to Skelghyll and Troutbeck and diverges across to Holbeck Ghyll. They propose pushing the footpath away from the bus stop and starting it on the dangerous blind corner on the far side of the new entrance.

I didn’t see any mention relating to increased traffic congestion and carbon footprint in the National Park. The façade of the hotel appears to be an ugly terrace and I suspect that anyone driving or sailing past will shudder and ask who allowed such an eyesore. That would be the Lake District National Park Authority in Kendal, who were represented at the exhibition.

This new hotel will create an extra 30 jobs, so that’s all right then!
