National Grid should rightly be applauded for their plans to reduce the visual impact of their pylons in certain popular beauty spots. However, you and your readers should be aware that, in the case of one particular beauty spot, they are bent on doing exactly the opposite.

I refer to their scheme for transporting power from the proposed Moorside nuclear power station on the fringe of the English Lake District.

They have ignored the opinions of the majority of people who responded to a consultation and, rather than burying their cables, have decided on the cheaper alternative of constructing 24km of 50m tall pylons (conventional pylons are half this height) through the Lake District National Park itself and another 18km of pylons adjacent to the park.

The effect of these giant structures on the landscape and its enjoyment by literally millions of visitors would be long term and incalculable. American-owned National Grid has a corporate vision expressed as 'do the right thing'. We hope they can be persuaded to live up to that vision.
