Over the weekend of November 7/8 I contacted the Stagecoach helpline for assistance to travel to Kirkby Lonsdale on the Monday (November 9) to attend a funeral.

I had been advised I could return to Kendal on a number '99' bus leaving from Queen Elizabeth School, Kirkby Lonsdale, at 3.35pm (usually a bus for pupils) but I was fully entitled to travel using this service.

During my morning outgoing journey to Kirkby a number of my fellow passengers were of the opinion I would not be able to do so. I enquired from the driver of my bus (567 route), who said it was indeed OK and even went to the trouble to 'phone his office for further confirmation.

I duly caught my '99' bus and as the driver and I returned to Kendal in respective splendid isolation (pupils at school had finished at lunch time for teacher training) we encountered no Dick Turpin on 'our Stagecoach'.

Having used my bus pass (I've attained my three score years and ten) I returned home late afternoon with all my monthly pocket money intact in time for an evening appointment, despite the severely flooded roads en route.

Even as a mature student you learn something some days.

Hats off to the Stagecoach drivers and the office staff - you did yourselves proud.
