However distressing and inconvenient the closure of the A591 main arterial route through the Lakes is to both residents, businesses and visitors, the proposed opening up of the forest road above the A591 will certainly help with a shuttle bus service dependent on winter weather conditions.
The recent statement by the Transport Minister that it was hoped to have the A591 fully open by May is perhaps somewhat optimistic, considering that February and March can present winter conditions resulting in road closures due to ice and snow. Not ideal conditions for carrying out a major road construction project.
Let us all hope that the remaining winter months are mild and that this major route re-opens as predicted at the end of May, although the early Easter and May bank holiday tourist season could be affected by the road closure.
