David C. Smith (Letters, January 21, '20mph limit will hit businesses') feels that most Kendalians will be happy to see all residential streets restricted to 20mph, and so do we.
But David feels our main roads should stay at 30mph to avoid a 'detrimental effect on businesses'.
There is no evidence that 20mph main roads would be bad for Kendal businesses – quite the opposite. 20mph limits will smooth traffic flow, reduce minor collisions and make our town quieter, cleaner and safer for businesses and their customers. Crucially, they will encourage more walking, which will ease traffic pressure in town.
20’s Plenty for Kendal accepts the argument in favour of 20mph for main roads, as well as residential roads, has not been completely won – not yet.
But Kendal’s main roads are residential roads too – and those residents deserve safer, quieter, cleaner, more civilised streets, just like the rest of us.
Main roads are where people walk and where people cross. Main roads are where shops and workplaces are. Where schools and colleges, restaurants and bars, bus stops and car parks are. They are the starting and ending points for massive numbers of walking journeys.
Our main roads should be 20mph too. And 20’s Plenty for Kendal will continue to campaign for that.
