I was asked a few weeks ago to speak at Giggleswick Women's Institute based around a book I wrote a few years ago called 'Beyond Expectation', which is a personal journey about people I have come across who have made a difference.
Looking through the book for some extracts I thought might be of interest, I came across a section I wrote about June Walton. June and I attended Rainhall Road Junior School at Barnoldswick. What made June outstanding was her footballing skill.
I checked the rules and there was no mention in them that girls couldn't play in the teams. So, as captain of the football team, I tried very hard to persuade our headmistress Miss Riding to let June play in our school football team.
Eventually I won the day and June played on the left wing in our 1959/60 season, very successfully. Her mother sent a picture to a local newspaper in 2004 with some script that mentioned June then lived in Kendal.
I would like to give her a copy of my book. She can contact me by email, terry@terry hodgkinson.com, or by phone on 07885-416265.
