I am a young chap breaking into the world of full-time employment. I obviously can’t remember a time where Mr Farron hasn’t been our local MP. I even remember the days in my early teens where we would see him on the doorstep engaging with the community - but now, his presence seems non-existent and his ability to tackle local issues nowadays stretch only as far as a photo opportunity. I’ve tolerated his new laid-back approach for a few years. But his response to the EU referendum is where I draw the line.

For those who have been avoiding any news over the past week, for which I cannot blame them, they may not have noticed that the Lib Dem leader and our MP is set to fight the next General Election on the manifesto pledge of rejoining the EU and overturning this very fair result. Even though I did campaign for a Leave vote during the referendum, I find it hard to believe anyone could agree with such (of what I’d describe as) a very anti-democratic stance. Mr Farron says he “accepts the result of the referendum" but how can you “accept” a choice the people have democratically made and then pledge to ignore their choice if elected in 2020. It is also worth mentioning the fact that during the referendum campaign Mr Farron also described the motived of Leavers as “extreme” which is a very strong statement considering 30,800 of his constituents in the South Lakes alone voted to Leave the EU. Never in my wildest dreams would I contemplate describing a Remainer as “extreme” for holding a different view of how the nation should move forward.

I’m in no way writing to demand the resignation of Tim Farron as our Member of Parliament, that's for the people to decide. The reason I am writing is because I urge the people of our beautiful, strong area to take time to think over the next couple of years to think about who they want representing them. In my personal opinion, Mr Farron has done good service for our community but I think he is past his sell-by date after taking such an anti-democratic stance and I think we need a representative (pro EU or not) who is willing to take Brexit in their stride and bring a new lease of life back into the local area. I ask others to evaluate whether he still is the man to take us forward or not.
