The Pennine Way: The Path, the People, the Journey, by Andrew McCloy £12.95
This new book from local publisher Cicerone Press is a beautiful and thoughtful celebration of our original and best known long distance path.
Having been fascinated by it since his early years, Andrew McCloy finally made his way up the Pennines, from Edale to Kirk Yetholm, in 2015, the year of the path's 50th anniversary. But this is far more than just an account of his journey as he explores the history of the National Trail from the first idea of it, to the official opening in 1965, through its 'heyday' in the 70s and 80s to the present day. Mostly, however, it is a story of the people of the Pennine Way, those who have written about it, walked it, look after it and work along it.
The interweaving of these stories offers a wonderful insight into just why The Pennine Way can hold such a special place in the heart.
