I DO not find Councillor Peter Thornton’s arguments for not restoring the lido in Grange in any way convincing (letters, February 9, ‘Pool would not be viable’).

It seems extraordinary that small communities like Shap, Lazonby, Greystoke and even the larger Appleby can manage to maintain outdoor pools, with an increase in user numbers at Greystoke.

According to weather statistics Grange, with its favourable micro-climate, has more average sunshine than Bournemouth, so why cannot solar panels supply the heating?

Even if the pool was half its present size, local primary schools could learn to swim there.

A smaller area could still be utilised as a paddling pool for playgroups, and although the health and safety bugbear always rears its ugly head, volunteers from toddler groups could be on guard.

It is time Grange attracted a younger element, for parents and children as well as coach parties of the retired.
