WHILE I wouldn't agree with everything our MP Tim Farron stands for, it seems unjustified to me that Peter Gaukroger, (Letters, May 25, 'Manifesto is not a winner'), should be quite so rude about the Lib Dem policies.

To my mind many of their manifesto commitments do, actually, seem very sensible and well-thought out.

On reflection, it is more an indictment of our present inadequate electoral system that, in all probability, none will become statute but this, per se, is no reason to dismiss them out of hand.

Let me take one example - with the aim of reversing the NHS crisis and to help support other vital public services, I for one would be more than happy to pay an extra penny on income tax! This is a sensible proposal and always has been.

The real monster raving policies are, however, blue in colour, locking us into the present trajectory of unfair austerity and low taxation ethos causing intolerable burdens upon all of our public services.

Paying tax is a good thing not to be avoided or evaded, and those of us eligible should do so gladly if we want this country to thrive!

One final thing, Mr Gaukroger is also wrong to suggest our MP says little in the defence of the farming community. Less than a year ago Tim Farron and his team ran a sustained campaign to ensure local farmers will benefit from at least the same level of support post Brexit as they have at present.
