Letter: Gideon Bible plays vital role

As a local member of Gideons International, I am disappointed to read of a hotel replacing the Bible with an erotic novel (‘Steamy bestseller replaces the Bible,’ Gazette, July 19).
The following quotation (from a letter) will help to explain: ‘We arrived at our hotel miles from home and in an hour we were arguing again so my husband picked up his bag and left me there.
'There was a Gideon Bible on the side and I picked it up and began to read. The page I turned to just made me feel that God was talking to me, it was so incredible I just kept reading. After some hours I rang my husband and told him I had been reading the Bible and that I would like him to come back so that we could try and work things out.
'I can’t thank you enough for if it had not been for the Gideon Bible I don’t think our marriage would have survived and I know we would not have come to know the Lord Jesus as we do.’
That is an example of the many letters received by the National Office of Gideons explaining the profound benefit the Bible at a bedside has been to hotel guests. The Bible speaks positively into a whole variety of life’s circumstances, good and bad, and has brought comfort, guidance and challenge to millions throughout the world.
My disappointment is chiefly for the hotel guests who are being sold short by the offer of brief titillation instead of the life-giving word of God.
