As we are all encouraged to recycle, it becomes clear that junk mail accounts for a significant part of unwanted paper.

Here are some tips on opting out:

• Royal Mail need you to fill in a form every two years to stop them from pushing unstamped mail through your letterbox. Go to www.royalmail.com and type ‘controlling my mail’ into the search box, then click on the ‘Controlling my mail’ link which gives details of how to opt out.

• Stamped junk mail can be reduced by registering with the Mailing Preference Service. Register online at www.mpsonline.org.uk/mpsr. This only stops junk from companies that you have never purchased anything from.

• If you want to stop other unwanted mail then you need to contact each company and request that they remove your details from their marketing database (they are required to do this). You can normally find the contact details somewhere in small print on the address label, generally an email address or postal address.

The emphasis is for online communication because all of the companies try to keep costs low. If you do not have internet access then your local Citizens Advice or anyone with an internet connection can help you.

Free, confidential advice and help is available from Citizens Advice on any aspect of debt, benefits, housing, employment and any other problems.
