I have a problem with rising damp in my flat, but I’m worried that if I complain my landlord will evict me. What should I do?
Landlords used to be allowed to evict tenants without a reason, but for tenancies starting on or after October 1, 2015 it is illegal to evict tenants for reporting a problem, provided they use the right procedure.
Write to your landlord explaining what is wrong. If they don’t respond within 14 days, or they issue an eviction notice, contact the council, who will inspect the property.
If the council confirm that there is a health and safety issue, any eviction notice is invalid. They will also ensure that the landlord fixes the problem.
