It can be extremely complicated to change energy supplier and with confusing bills it can be hard to work out the savings for all the effort.

Fewer than 1 in3 of us switch, but money can be saved if we are savvy with our tariff.

Here are some tips: Telephone your existing energy supplier and check you are on the best rate. You could explain that you are thinking of switching just to see what they offer to keep your custom. Many ‘deals’ last 12 or 18 months, so if you switched a long time ago there is a good chance you could make a new saving without the agro of switching supplier.

If you are on benefits or a low income check your energy supplier knows. Ask if you qualify for a ‘Social Tariff’. These offer lower rates to certain customers to help avoid ‘fuel poverty’.

If you receive Pension Credit you should automatically receive the ‘Warm Home Discount Scheme’ a £120 rebate for this winter. Check your energy supplier is registered for the scheme so you don’t miss out.
