Made In Japan by Deep Purple, a double album recorded live and released in 1972 on Purple Records

IF YOU buy a boy a guitar, what's the first guitar riff he is going to learn and play? The answer of course is Deep Purple's Smoke On The Water. Listed as the world's loudest band, Smoke On The Water propelled the band to international status around the world. Formed in 1968 they went through many formats of music, psychedelic to progressive rock, then hard rock and finally emerging as a heavy metal band.

In 1972 the line up featured founder members, lead guitarist Richie Blackmore, organist/keyboard player Jon Lord, and drummer Ian Paice with Roger Glover as bass guitarist and Ian Gillan, lead singer.

This live recording was made at the Festival Hall, Osaka on August 15/16 and the 17th at the Budokan Centre in Tokyo. Originally titled Live In Japan, the band never planned to release it outside of Japan, but it was released so the title changed. It was issued on two 12" vinyl discs on a double album with a special offer of £3.25p, the same as an ordinary priced LP at that time. First pressings of the album show a picture of the band performing on stage, it also included several photographs placed inside the sleeves; these were later revealed as pictures taken earlier in the Rainbow Theatre in London! Eventually, like most rock bands, after initial success there followed the usual acrimony which led to relationship breakdown between some of the band members who departed citing musical differences and wanting to pursue other musical directions. The first to go were Ian Gillan and Roger Glover replaced by singer David Coverdale and bassist and vocalist Glenn Hughes.

Ritchie Blackmore left a couple of albums later and founded the band Rainbow, achieving major success with hit songs Since You've Been Gone and I Surrender and many others.

After a few years frontman Coverdale left and formed Whitesnake and also found success with hits such as Is This Love and Here I Go Again.

Depending on the line up, the band referred to themselves as Deep Purple Mk1, Mk2 and so on.

The band are currently midway through their The Long Goodbye Tour, which began last year promoting what appears to be their final album Infinite released in 2016. They only have three of the old members Ian Gillan, Roger Glover and Ian Paice; they refer to themselves as Deep Purple Mk8. Their final concert appearance will be at Rio De Janeiro on December 15.
