THE need for more housing - and specifically for more 'affordable housing' - continues to be a major issue facing South Lakeland.

There is a huge demand from young, local people to get on the housing ladder. But the high costs of homes in such a popular area, combined with the large amount of holiday and second homes, means it is almost impossible for them to find somewhere they can afford.

Partly to address this issue, South Lakeland District Council drew up a development plan, which aims to find sites where up to 8,800 new homes could be built before 2025, a proportion of which would be 'affordable'.

That process proved hugely controversial, with many arguments put forward by people fearing the plans would spoil the environment and views, and lead to unacceptable increases in traffic.

And the debate is continuing - with attention now focused on the detail of what might, or might not, be allowed at certain large sites.

From October 23 for six weeks, residents will be able to scrutinise the most detailed proposals yet for seven greenfield sites in Kendal, Ulverston, Kirkby Lonsdale and Milnthorpe, where a total of 1,685 homes could be built.

It follows an initial consultation held in February and March, when residents raised concerns and submitted hundreds of suggestions over how the plans could be changed or improved. Those concerns - over traffic, design, environmental impact and public transport, to name a few - were then taken into account before the current, more detailed, plans were put together.

Those who opposed sites being earmarked for housing have largely lost their battle - but it is still vital they remain vigilant to ensure that whatever is built includes the best possible features.

For example, someone living in a cul-de-sac might spot that it is proposed their quiet road is opened up to provide access to a new site. Is that the best way forward? Now is the time to make representations.
