AMBLESIDE started the new Cumbria Hockey League season in style after an emphatic 14-1 victory against local rivals Kendal’s second team.

The team worked well from the off, with a bright start rewarded almost immediately when April Barclay got on the end of a cross that had beaten the Kendal goalkeeper. The greens continued to press on, with Jess Young and Donna Robinson adding another two goals in quick succession from a couple of well taken penalty corners. Donna was a particular thorn in Kendal’s side, carrying the ball well and driving the team forward in a succession of attacks. The continued pressure from the greens was soon rewarded with two more goals, this time from youngster Maddie Townson, who read the game well and on both occasions placed herself perfectly on the back post to finish off two well placed crosses. Donna Robinson and Jess Young quickly added their second goals of the game, after a strong strike from the edge of the D by Robinson saw Ambleside go 6-0 up before Young added the 7th soon after

April Barclay scored her second of the game with a tap in past the keeper as Ambleside were 8-0 up at half time.

Ambleside continued to dominate during the second half after Rio Knowles added her name to the scoresheet, before Holly Strickland and Amanda Faulkner saw The Greens surge into a 11-0 lead.

The hosts continued to run riot against a depleted Kendal team, while Jess Young and April Barclay completed their hat tricks before Amanda Faulkner scored her second with a deflected shot tht looped over the keeper.

Kendal battled and scored a late consolation after Molly Thwaites converted a penalty corner..

Ambleside travel to play Kirkby Lonsdale this weekend, Rio Knowles was voted the player of the match.
