I have just returned from a holiday in Mallorca and if anyone thinks tourists are ripped off in the Lakes, we don’t know how lucky we are!
My husband and I set off to do a famous gorge walk one day, parking in the only car park there so there was no choice.
The tariff said 2.20 euro, approximately £2, per hour.
After completing the walk, having a swim and a drink we returned about eight hours later, around 6pm. On exiting the pay on foot car park, we found the charge for the day was 19.60 euro (£17.35).
To say we weren’t happy was an understatement.
Furthermore on a following day, setting off on a walk, equivalent to Helvellyn, we had to pass a sentry box, where we were charged 6 euro each for the privilege of passing through the gate to be able to continue with the walk.
Imagine the outcry in the Lakes if we tried to do that.
