I read about tree stumps encrusted by coins at Tarn Hows (Letter, April 10, ‘What a waste of money!’).

‘Wish trees’ are meaningful and harmless. Coins are inserted into dead trees or stumps for wishes and offerings.

It can be related to religious views and spiritual value. However, traditionally, they are linked with fertility.

Everyone has their own wishes and each individual should be able to express their wishes or dreams in the way that they believe.

Many famous artists believe in this tradition, including Yoko Ono, who displayed many wish trees in her creative art exhibitions.

Even Queen Victoria wrote about visiting a wish tree in 1877.

It is a belief that has been around for years. What will you wish for?
