There seems to be some confusion about the numbers of men recorded on Kendal town war memorial.
There are 316 names of those who died during the Great War.
The casualty figures are:- six died in 1914; 35 in 1915; 94 in 1916; 87 in 1917; 85 in 1918 and seven who died during 1919.
In addition there are also two men named on the memorial who I am unable to trace.
Certainly July to December of 1916 was the worst six-month period, as 79 died, that being 25 per cent of the total.
Of these, 46 men served with the Border Regiment, 24 of them being with 8th Battalion. The remainder served with no fewer than 24 different units.
