I read the report 'Let's breathe new life into ghost town' (Gazette, December 11). Well, I would start with cleaning up Kendal!

The Dowker Lane car park in Kendal is an absolute disgrace due to litter. There are left-over meals cartons, bottles and cans. Even the raised garden beds are Christened with rubbish.

On the main street itself there is chewing gum stuck into the footpaths - yuk!

Shame on the local council for letting a lovely old town get into this mess. No wonder not many people go there.

A South Lakeland District Council spokesman told the Gazette: 'Our street cleansing operatives work hard to keep Kendal’s streets as tidy and litter-free as possible but obviously it is not possible to be cleaning all areas all of the time.

'Dowker’s Lane is swept on a four weekly schedule and is litter picked once per week, but in the meantime if we receive a specific complaint about litter in an area then operatives will go out to clear it up.’'
