I was interested to read the piece on the ‘last disco’ at the Dun Horse in Kendal (Gazette, January 8, ‘Pub closes for £250K facelift’) as I was involved in the very first disco at the Dun Horse, back in August 1966!
In fact it was, as far as I know, the very first disco in Kendal, or even in Westmorland.
I was working at the Kendal Brewery, in the years when the Vat bars were full of ale rather than drinkers, and was sent over to the Dun Horse with some new fluorescent tubes. Apparently they would glow in the dark and make white shirts light up. It was to be a new kind of dance venue called Discotsomething! None of us quite knew what was going on, but it clearly caught on!
As I understand it, the owners are planning a significant investment at the Dun Horse and have earmarked more than £250,000 for refurbishment.
I’m sure the Dun Horse, and all of our Kendal pubs, will continue to lead the way when it reopens, hopefully before too long.
