There has been a flurry of letters recently on the pros and cons of a 20mph speed limit in Kendal.

Like all subjects for popular protest, such as nuclear power, fracking and GM foods, the more vociferous protesters seem to be those who are largely motivated by emotional issues.

Regarding this speed limit, I recommend letting matters take their course. Already congestion is so great that 20mph is not possible in many areas of the town.

Imagine when the council’s plan for 6,000 new homes in South Lakeland is met and an additional corresponding number of cars are on the road (10,000?) - gridlock is likely to be complete for much of the day.

Consider that many of these new homes, for example, Stainbank Green and Underbarrow Road, are not served by any public transport or local shop so that popping out for a loaf of bread will require the use of a car.

The dream of getting people walking again will only be realised there is no alternative as traffic is at a standstill. Massive upgrading of roads is a possibility but will lead to destruction of much of what makes Kendal what it is.

With the increasing population (remember that the majority will be pensioners), consider also the increased burden on all other services, particularly health.
