The headlines and letters in connection with additional cycle storage, cycle hire, and provision of cycle lanes are all well and good in a real world (Gazette, July 30, ‘Get on your bikes’). You are never ever going to make a significant reduction in the amount of traffic using the narrow, congested streets of Kendal.

If anything, the volume of traffic is going to increase significantly with all the additional house building and job creation that is planned.

Additional cycle usage within Kendal brings the additional risks of accidents with the lack of cycle lanes, which would be difficult to provide given the existing road layout.

Although I have never been in favour of building your way out of problems, Cumbria County Council must investigate the feasibility of a new road link from Plumgarths roundabout to the A6. This would allow access to all the industrial estates and businesses, plus supermarkets on the north side of the town by both workers, shoppers, deliveries and collections, all who at present have to travel through Kendal to access that side of town.

If our leaders wish to bring new businesses, jobs and hundreds of new home to Kendal then money must be provided for its infrastructure rather than tinkering round with what we have.
