While I applaud those brave souls wishing to cycle around the narrow dark roads around the Lakes, it never ceases to amaze me how so many cyclists choose to wear such dark clothes when competing with so many ever larger and faster cars and lorries for safe road passage, the drivers of which are often distracted by the modern epidemic of satnavs and smart phones.

Surely it is time to oblige all cyclists to wear high viz reflective jackets, just the same as road workers wear for their own safety.

Those companies hiring cycles could lead the way, as their clients are less likely to have suitable safety gear, and are often too busy wobbling to look behind them to avoid impending doom. In France it is compulsory for every occupant in a car to have a high viz jacket in case of breakdown or accident.

The minor cost and negligible inconvenience are nothing to the trauma of a collision and the consequences to the unfortunate cyclist, the police and the emergency response and care services.
