Robert Boak, of Allithwaite, raised a worrying issue in his letter about carers (Letters, July 16, ‘Will we see almshouses?’) when describing how the people they look after sometimes need food banks.

The Kings Church Food Bank in Kendal does a magnificent job in coordinating the gifts of many groups to save families from starvation.

We have just learned, from Church Action on Poverty, that a cross party committee of MPs is to inquire into why there are ‘holes’ in the welfare safety net and to make recommendations.

It is these ‘holes’ which are one reason why people are suddenly left without money.
