Some signposts from the time when Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire were individual counties still stand at our cross roads, lane ends, entrances to hamlets and villages. They are now what people call 'heritage signs' or 'finger posts' and there are three in the Parish of St John’s Castlerigg and Wythburn.

Some parishes have been able to refurbish them and they now look so smart standing in the landscape in their distinctive black and white paint.

Some of those in our parish have fingers missing, are cracked or broken. We have been finding funding and putting aside money to pay for the three in the parish and to help we are doing teas every Sunday afternoon throughout August at Thirlmere Recreation Hall.

Do come so that in the future when you drive through St John’s in the Vale or over Dunmail Raise they will stand proud in the landscape once again.

They say the A591 is supposed to be one of the 'best drives' so let's improve it by having the one at Armboth Lane End refurbished and the two half way down St John’s in the Vale, refurbished.
