I believe my previous letter may have been misunderstood, in that some people believed I advocated “breaking the law” regarding exceeding the proposed 20mph limits (Letters, August 13, ‘Roads are the car’s domain’).

The existing 30mph is fine. The police have no manpower to implement them, so why bother with time and expense?

I merely stated that some people - “working motorists” - are forced to exceed that speed to get through town to meet deadlines and assignments. I certainly could never have done my job at 20mph. (Even 30mph is slow!) Why if you are working at 2am in the morning, with no-one else on the road, should you crawl at 20mph?

I have just spent an hour on my ward (Underley) and saw about 24 vehicles. Surely it is not so hard to look before you cross a road? On that note - electric cars, you cannot hear them coming! I have not met one person on my ward (Underley) who supports the 20mph limit.

Let’s give this area back to the working people who actually make the money, not the retired country cottage types who want a pretty Lakeland home. Roads are for cars, not pedestrians or kids.

A correspondent replied to one of my previous letters saying that I had ignored the thousands of cars parked on pavements. I don’t think so. How many miles of pavements do they think have we have in Kendal?

As someone who used to have to call in at ten-minute jobs, I can perfectly understand why some motorists pull up on the kerb for a few moments, thus avoiding yellow lines, recently closed-off roads, and exorbitant parking fees and having to wait a month for their company to reimburse their parking fees on expenses. (Try doing that six times a day for a month and see how much you are in debt!)

Everyone who wants home delivery, taxis, or tradesmen and care workers at their home - support working motorists.
