Having plenty to share means Kendal people are stepping up to help refugees with marvellous donations, both in terms of money and giving essentials to the load being organised through our parish church.
When the Commonwealth was at full strength it protected the markets between nations that belonged. Help was offered with respect, similar to European funds that can provide for areas of Europe to assist deprived regions, even in richer countries like the UK.
So it was exciting to meet Julie Ward on her travels as Brussels MEP. She sits on the culture and sport committee and is a spokesperson for education and children.
Speaking at Windermere’s Marchesi Centre, she spoke about her life representing the Lake District. We found out she has a budget to invite groups who care to visit the European Parliament to discover that it’s more than a law-making system. In fact she recently won an amendment over sex education and children. The circular chamber gives rise to gentler discussion and simultaneous translations enhance the dialogue.
We are fortunate to have such a busy and active MEP to represent us, who inspires trust and confidence in the European parliament, a body needful to take responsibility for elements like pollution that crosses borders, a threat that can only be managed through co-operation among countries. From big problems to minor ones, the European parliament can face up to difficulties with confidence and rigour.
