We enjoyed the Schubert Octet at the mid-day concert in Kendal Town Hall, performed brilliantly by the group of players from the Royal Northern Sinfonia.

Brian Paynes’ report was accompanied by a publicity photoGRAPH showing Bradley Creswick, principal violinist with the RNS, rather curiously wielding a bassoon. Enthusiasts might be interested to know its origin.

A group of Sinfonia players each agreed to learn a second instrument and undergo grade one examinations, and then to play their new instruments in a short orchestral concert as a fundraiser.

Our amateur Cobweb Orchestra had the honour of accompanying them, and we gathered one lunchtime in the foyer of the Sage Gateshead, with people eating lunch all around us. The concert was deemed a success and a generous bucket collection took place.

The word was that all the Sinfonia players got distinctions in the exam and Bradley himself was said to be a bit disappointed that he hadn’t quite scored 100 PER CENT.

Our local Cobweb Orchestra group meets at Tebay Methodist Church on Tuesday evenings - all players of all standards are always very welcome. The website is www.cobweborchestra.org.uk.
