I read the report about plans to build a causeway across Morecambe Bay, together with a large number of tidal turbines generating a substantial quantity of green energy (Gazette, February 11, 'Plans for £8bn green bridge').

The roadway on top of the causeway would also bring much better access to Barrow and the surrounding area, and remove the large number of heavy lorries from the present, mostly single-carriage way, twisting and dangerous A590 main road.

The causeway, when connected to the new bridge being built next to the M6 motorway bridge over the River Ribble, would greatly reduce the distance and time taken to get from the motorway to the Barrow area.

I have also read about the building of two nuclear power stations on the west coast of Cumbria and where the power cables are to be run to connect the new power stations to the national grid.

I cannot comment on the running of these cables over land, but I read in an article that the National Grid was considering building or boring a tunnel under the Morecambe bay to connect the cables into the national grid at Heysham. What a job that would be!

Surely the two companies, North West Energy Squared and the National Grid, could get together and include in the design of the causeway a suitable duct to take the power cables from the Barrow area across the bay to Heysham to connection with the national grid.

The power generated by the causeway generators could be fed directly into the grid via the cables in the ducts.

The two companies would also share the cost of building of the causeway. It is also possible a start could be made soon in the building of the causeway and not have to wait another ten or more years.
