This is a photograph of a raft race taking place on the river Kent on May 29, 1965.

Before leaving Kendal, my hometown, in 1966, I was a member of St. Thomas's Youth Group. Several members took part in this raft race.

One member of the group at that time was Michael Fazerkely (known to all as 'Faz'). Is he still in Kendal I wonder?

It will be my 77th birthday in July and I find myself recalling times past in Kendal. What a different town it is today!

On the last occasion I returned, the only shop I could find that hadn't got a new name over the door was 'Farrer's' - the coffee shop on Highgate.

The aroma of coffee when passing the shop was truly amazing.

Kendal has changed a great deal from the times I remember growing up there in the forties and fifties. It is now much more vibrant and self confident.

The photo of the raft race may bring back memories for some readers. For the life of me, I cannot remember how it came about or who organised it. I do know the youth group had at least one entry.
