I totally agreed with Ruth Southall (Letters, April 28, 'Charges are much better'). I would add that excessive parking charges really do sour visitors view of the Lakes.
I made a quick visit to Windermere last week and, unable to find a free parking space, I had to go into the car park near the library. The £1.50 I paid for an hour is a joke, especially as my visit was over in 10 minutes.
Recently I was visiting the well-heeled town of Salcombe in Devon. There the charge is £1 per hour.
I see no justification in charging our higher fee.
We want to encourage more walkers and cyclists. Therefore a maximum of £4 for the day should be universal for the Lake District.
