I would like to thank local residents for their overwhelming support in our fight to save Kendal’s mental health ward, as well as The Westmorland Gazette for launching its own campaign.
With more than 5,000 people having signed the petition, local people have made it very clear that these services are essential and we will not let them be taken away without a fight.
Last week’s announcement was a crucial first step towards saving the ward, but I am determined now to step up the campaign.
We have managed to win a temporary reprieve, but the Trust will be making a final decision about the future of the ward later in the summer.
The CQC have made clear that they think the required improvements can take place within the current building. I have further meetings planned with the Partnership Trust and will do all I can to make the case for the ward remaining open.
I have long campaigned to give mental health a higher profile, and will do all I can to keep these critical services in South Lakeland.
