Your feature of the Border Regiment in the June 30 edition 'Somme heroes live on in letters' was of particular interest to me as my Uncle Tommy Slee was involved as a soldier in the 11th (Lonsdale Bn.) Border and took part in the attack on Mouquet farm; 25 officers and 800 men went into action at 7.30am and some ten minutes later only three officers and 300 men remained - including my Uncle Tom who survived until the end of the war. Ironically, he was killed much nearer home many years later when crossing a road in Carlisle.
