The introduction by National Grid of underground lines through the Lake District National Park and under Morecambe Bay to take electricity from the proposed Moorside nuclear power station is to be welcomed and will certainly reduce the visual impact of this vast project.
Is this not the correct time to reconsider the possibility of an all-purpose tunnel or bridge traversing Morecambe Bay as suggested some years ago by David Brockbank of Staveley?
The Government is considering many future infrastructure projects. The proposed Northern Power house is a good example. Why should it only include Manchester and Leeds, important though they are? Why not include other important areas of the North, such as Barrow, the country's most strategic naval boat yard and the smaller towns on the west coast of Cumbria crying out for development?
The Government must expand its thinking and share its investment, not just with the major conurbations of Lancashire and West Yorkshire but with the equally important smaller areas of the North.
