I read the report 'Keep your dogs on a lead plea' (Gazette, February 2).

We farm the land on Brigsteer Road, which includes the old Kendal racecourse, which has two footpaths running across.

At present we have pregnant ewes in the field. There are several signs requesting that dog owners keep their dogs on leads, if not at least under close control, which means at heel.

Unfortunately when we do ask dog owners to pop a lead on, we get met with 'cheer up' , 'don't be grumpy' and my favourite: 'My dog doesn't chase sheep'.

The dog may not, but the sheep don't know that and, like any animal, a dog can be unpredictable.

Even causing stress to the ewes can result in the ewes aborting her lambs.

This is our livelihood, so dog owners please be responsible and keep your dogs on a lead.
