The report about on the new book about to be published by Andy Beck highlighted 'the cairn atop Dove Crag' (Gazette, March 2, 'Artist Andy follows in Wainwright's path').
The illustration you used actually shows the fine cairn atop High Bakestones, the hill overlooking Scandale to the south of Dove Crag. A small error you might think, but really very important if relying on a visual sighting when route finding, the cairn on Dove Crag being just a pile of stones.
Interestingly, the number of cairns on High Bakestones has varied over the years. I have seen anything up to four clustered on the summit.
The photograph above was taken on a snowy February day back in 2010 that really puts the cairn in its setting.
