A sub-headline to your report suggesting that Cartmel village is split over the decision to use yellow lines to try to control parking in the village (Gazette, March 23, 'County backs yellow lines'), is hardly borne out by responses sent to the council results you published.

There were 47 per cent in support of yellow lines versus 31 per cent objecting. This seems quite a hefty majority in favour, in fact rather better than the vote for Brexit.

The next challenge will be to persuade local politicians to take positive action to stop drivers who see Cartmel as an extension of the M6.

Many drivers seem unable to appreciate that Cartmel is a small village where school children, elderly residents, the disabled and walkers are forced to share the road with them.

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, around two-thirds of crashes in which people are killed or injured occur on roads with a speed limit of 30mph. Drivers through Cartmel regularly exceed this limit.

The time is now right for a change in driver attitude and the creation of a '20's Plenty' area in Cartmel alongside a perfectly reasonable attempt to control unrestricted parking.
