SOVEREIGNTY? What sovereignty?
There is one consequence of leaving the European Union that has been largely ignored by recent correspondence in the Gazette – that is the almost certain loss (yes, that’s right: ‘loss’) of sovereignty.
For decades, our foreign and defence policies have been as much determined in Washington as in London with the predictable (and predicted) tragic results in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.
For all its faults, the EU has been a ‘sea anchor’ – restraining member states from extreme reactions during stormy political weather. Once we have severed that connection, it is a virtual certainty that we will become even more firmly embraced in that ‘special relationship’ with the US, and compelled by political and economic realities to support whatever foreign adventures are dreamed up in the White House.
Keep your fingers crossed.
