Further to a Picture from the Past (Nostalgia, June 8), and the tower projecting into Haweswater reservoir, looking south, this tower is the straining tower where the water enters the pipe to Manchester.
It was built with the stones of Mardale Church’s walls and tower.
The burials in Mardale Churchyard were taken to Shap’s new churchyard at the foot of the hill beyond the railway on the Crosby Ravensworth road.
Their tombstones went with them to a special plot, all together there.
The church’s fittings went partly to Newlands Church near Keswick.
The Grammar School was dismantled and moved down the valley where it is now a private house, north of Burnbanks, at Walmgate Head.
