TODAY I attended the opening of the new Rinkfield Play Area and I would like to take the opportunity through your letters page to give a big shout out to all the Rinkfield/Burland Grove Residents association for a brilliant afternoon.

They had organised first class entertainment, from circus performers to local musicians, all of whom were outstanding. Many of the committee had baked and prepared food (of which there was plenty) and all was given for free.

I fully appreciate that the funding for the play area and the opening event came via a National Lottery Grant. However, that was merely the financial contribution.

The months of hard work and planning that the committee has contributed, from applying for funding to organising safety inspections, risk assessments etc, should not be forgotten.

The play area itself is bright, colourful and promotes exercise for the kids. There is also a mini gym area set up that can be used by both children and adults alike. Kendal Liesure Centre staff were also giving free day passes to all who attended.

All the above is a far cry from the concrete pipes that my son used to play on 30 years ago and will hopefully promote outdoor play instead of computer games but, moreover, the day promoted community spirit with a huge turn-out, despite the weather.

Well done and thank you to all concerned

Nikki Clement
