THOSE of us who love the Lake District will be horrified by the idea of scores of thrill seekers screaming and shouting as they 'zip' along wires suspended above Thirlmere.

Many of us travel some distance to walk on the Lakeland fells, enjoying the peace and tranquility which they have to offer.

In an upland landscape noise travels far and the ecstatic cries of those on the zipwires – all eight of them! - will reverberate around the adjacent fells and will be heard, no doubt, on the ever-popular Helvellyn, which is close by.

Walking is a very popular pastime, which brings enormous benefits to the area. Will these same walkers be so keen to visit the Lakes if the zip wire plan is approved?

I, for one, will have no desire to walk anywhere within its vicinity. How many more will follow suit?

Surely the very reason the Lake District National Park gained World Heritage Site status was because of the way it is now, not in the future as some kind of cheap thrill-seeking theme park.

Please, please don't let this happen.
