I AM concerned the exit from Larch Grove on to Parkside Road at Kendal has a blind spot.
It is impossible to observe the oncoming traffic from the right. The view is obscured by a beech hedge, which offers privacy to the residents. A simple solution to the problem is to install a convex mirror to an existing bridge sign directly across the road. Cumbria County Council Highways Department state this cannot be done.
Guidance issued by the Department of Transport:
l They reflect light that can interfere with drivers vision: If this mirror was installed it would be north facing - the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.
* Reduces the ability to judge on-coming vehicle’s speed:  Drivers exiting Larch Grove have no vision of oncoming traffic from the right, therefore we cannot judge speed. A mirror would increase your awareness of traffic.
* Create a unreasonable dependence on the mirror: They are right, we would use the mirror to enhance our awareness.
* If dirty, could distort or restrict the view: I, for on,e would give them a wipe clean.
* An easy target for vandals: Mirrors today are anti scratch and virtually unbreakable. Stainless steel mirrors are available. In my 27 years of living on Larch Grove, vandalism has not been a problem.
Various other county council have interpreted the Department of Transport with a more flexible approach than Cumbria, allowing road traffic mirrors to be installed in certain circumstances, where safety is concerned.
Recently South Lakeland District Council shut the New Road car park on health and safety grounds. What is a bigger risk, somebody tripping up, or a side-on collision between two vehicles? Both are unavoidable, yet our local politicians are only focused on New Road.
This junction needs action today, a mirror is a low cost option
